SoulS Excerpt- Meeting Kevon by =AKAcorn:iconAKAcorn:

The train station is relatively busy for such a cold day, Nick thought to himself. He pushed his gloved hands further into his pockets, gently squeezing them to help create more warmth. His breath appeared in small puffs of white that quickly dispersed with his incessant pacing.
“Nick, you really should sit down and try to calm yourself,” Jamie cut in, interrupting his meditating. He rolled his eyes over to her in a knowing look. She smiled slightly and raised her hands in mock defeat, knowing full well that him calming down was next to impossible.
“It is rather cold, isn’t it?” Chloe’s muffled voice asked. She had her pink scarf pulled up past her nose and her matching knitted hat pulled so far down so that all that could be seen was her bright hazel eyes. Sandra nodded in curt agreement.  In her hast, she had forgotten to bring a scarf and only had ear muffs on her person when the three others had gone to pick her up from the police station. Jamie had offered to let her borrow her scarf, but Sandra absolutely refused to accept the ghastly polka dotted thing.
“Feel like a cup of coffee, anyone?” Jamie asked, slowly getting to her feet and stretching. “I wish they had hot drinks in vending machines like I used to get in Japan, but anything hot will make due right now, I think.”
“I’ll take hot cocoa!” Chloe exclaimed, her eyes almost pleading. Jamie laughed.
“Extra marshmallow if they have it, right?” When Chloe nodded, Jamie turned to Sandra. “And you, Miss Ma’am?” She questioned in mock politeness. Sandra’s eyes flicked to hers and back to stare straight ahead.
         “Black.”
“Sure you don’t want some sugar to sweeten up your—“
“Jamie…” Nick warned, his voice the usual tone that he associated with Jamie, now. She slipped a grin in his direction and waved her hand in dismissal.
“Okay, okay. I gotcha. You want anything, Nick?” She asked, turning her attention to him. He declined and soon Jamie was jogging off towards the convenience store down the block from the train station.
         “Nick, I—“
“It’s fine, Sandra. No need to apologize,” He said, turning and smiling briefly at the ashamed woman.  Sandra let out a long sigh and shifted in her seat, wincing slightly.
“I just really can’t stand that girl,” She added, looking forlornly down the platform. Chloe quietly looked back and forth between the two stoic figures before finally deciding on closing her eyes and leaning against Sandra’s shoulder in an attempt to steal some warmth.

“I’m back!” Jamie called, coming to a halt next to the bench. Her face was flushed and she was breathing quickly.
“Are you all right?” Nick asked, stopping his pacing. Jamie nodded, grinning sheepishly.
“Yep, just fine. I was running to warm up. It felt great!” She turned and placed the drink carrier on the bench next to Sandra.
“Here’s your coffee, Ma’am,” she said, handing the Styrofoam cup over to the woman. “Careful, it’s hot.”
“Thanks for the warning,” Sandra deadpanned, taking the cup from her. Chloe perked up and reached across Sandra to grab her cup of hot chocolate.
“Did you get the extra marshmallows?” She giddily asked. Her excitement was short lived as she pulled back, her arm knocking Sandra’s cup from her hand.  Nick watched as the cup fell to Sandra’s lap. He expected to see the cup burst open, its hot contents spilling forth onto Sandra’s lap and causing a scene like you typically see in those comedy films. Luckily, it landed on its bottom and simply teetered long enough for Sandra to pick it up and let out a sigh of relief.
“I-I’m sorry!” Chloe exclaimed, raising her free hand to rest on Sandra’s shoulder. “I didn’t mean to do that!”
“Just be careful next time,” Sandra replied, taking a calm sip of her coffee. Chloe nodded, cradling her own cup between her two hands.
“I will,” she promised with a smile.  She took a sip of her own drink. “HOT!” She shouted.  Nick once again watched as a cup fell, this time from Chloe’s hand, towards Sandra’s lap. He took a step backwards, knowing lady luck wouldn’t be smiling down on them for a second time.
The cup twisted, drops of hot chocolate sailing in an arch along with it. It landed with a dull thud and a pop as the lid came off and the dark brown liquid oozed out. Sandra’s eyes closed, her lip firmly between her teeth as she refused to cry out.  There was a comical silence as half melted marshmallow dripped down her legs to the cold floor below.
“Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh!” Chloe cried around a swollen tongue. She jumped to her feet and grabbed the offered napkins from Jamie’s hand. Nick watched Jamie refrain from laughing as Chloe hurriedly tried to wipe away the mess she had created. He noticed Sandra’s hands were clenched at her sides and felt terribly sorry for the girl. She was going to be feeling this pain for the next few days. He commended her on taking the pain so well, but he suspected it had something to do with Chloe. Sandra did seem to have quite the soft spot for the girl.
“Sandra, I’m so, so sorry! I-I’m a horrible person!” Chloe sobbed. Sandra sighed and opened her eyes.
“I’ll live, Chloe. No need to be upset. I’ve dealt with worse stuff on the job,” she explained, patting the other girl’s head. Nick realized then that Chloe seemed so much like a young child that it would be almost impossible to be mad at her. He smiled to himself and turned around; noting that during the commotion, the train they had been waiting on had just come in.
“This the one?” Jamie asked, coming forward to stand next to him. He nodded and pulled out the document with the photograph attached.
“Kevon Liam, is his name. He’s from Ireland. Miss Deek said that he’d be arriving today on this train.”
“What does he look like again?” Sandra asked, brushing away Chloe’s hands and getting up to retrieve the paper from Nick.
“He’s a blonde male, seventy-thr—about 160 pounds and is 6’2”.” Nick answered, remembering to convert the numbers.  Chloe peeked over Sandra’s shoulder to get a good look at the picture.
“Is that a tattoo?” She asked, pointing at the star on the man’s left cheek. Nick nodded, frowning grimly.
“According to the report, it is. I don’t understand peoples’ taste these days,” he added. Jamie laughed and nudged Nick in the arm.
“You know what you need?” She asked, grinning at up at him. “A—“
“GROUP HUG!” Nick and Jamie barely had time to react before both of them were being clothes-lined backwards into Sandra and Chloe.
“What in the hell!?” Jamie shouted, fighting against the crazed behemoth that had everyone in a headlock.
“I’m so happy to meet you all!” The unfamiliar male voice shouted, letting them go and taking a few steps backwards. Nick straightened his coat and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
“Kevon Liam, I presume?” He asked, raising an eyebrow at the giddy person before them.
“That’s me!” He beamed, waving his hand. The Irish accent is noticeable, but not to the point of butchering his English, Nick reasoned. Apparently, Kevon had been practicing.
“Oh! Oh, no, Sandra!” Chloe suddenly cried out. Jamie and Nick turned in unison to see Sandra, for a second time that day, with her eyes closed and fists clenched at her side as the contents of her cup soaked its way into her clothing.
“I’ll take a wild guess and say that wasn’t the best of first impressions,” Jamie said, flashing a grin at Kevon who looked absolutely mortified.

Author's Comments

Finally inspired to write something.

Meet Kevon Liam. He's a total idiot. Actually, no. He's really not. He is, to be honest, very intelligent. He just lacks common sense. He's like a child in an adult's body.

I can't decide on whether I truly like this piece. I do like it because it displays the relationships between the characters rather well. I don't like it simply because I detest my writing style.

They say you are your own worst critic, however. I'm a prime example.

I'd really love to hear some opinions on this. Anything will do. I could use the inspiration boosters...

P.S. Poor Sandra....XD
